A PRAYER TO FINISH WELL

On this beautiful fall morning, I have “Stella “and “Sweetie Pye, by my side, and I am reflecting that in two months, I will be 82! And in this beautiful moment, I pray to finish well.

You see, I’m part of the 81-90 age group, which in America numbers about 10 million. Some call us the “over the hill gang!” For a lot of folks my age, the most exciting thing they do is sit in their rocking chair and watch Dr. Phil on “Pluto.” The longer they sit, the harder it is to get up, or even have the strength to go shopping! That’s the easy way.

How much more challenging it is to get up early, spend time in God’s Word, pray, take a walk, and live a day that will be a blessing to others. Here is what the Psalmist David said about old age and finishing well.

“O God, from my youth you have taught me, And I will proclaim your wondrous deeds So even to old age and gray hairs, O God, do not forsake me, Until I proclaim your might to another generation, Your power to all those to come.” [Psalm 7l: l7-18]

This Psalm is my testimony, for like David, I now can say,

I. “O God from my youth, you taught me and I still proclaim your wondrous deeds.” [71:l7]

It seems like only yesterday, I was a young person. How those years came and went so quickly. How I thank God in those days of my youth, friends and family taught me the deeds of the Lord, and how to live a life that matters for,

A good name is to be more desired than great riches.” (Proverbs 22:1, NASB)

MOM

Abraham Lincoln said, “All that I am, or ever hope to be, I owe to my angel mother.” That is my sentiment as well. Mom would read her Bible and pray every day with my two brothers, my sister, and me, and share the treasures of God’s Word. Even though Mom suffered from rheumatoid arthritis, she remained faithful in teaching Sunday School and telling everyone about Jesus.

DAD

Dad taught me how to work hard and give l00% to every task. He became a Christian when I was a teenager, and spent the rest of his life teaching boys in Sunday School and serving as a deacon in our Church. Dennis Rainey, said this about his father,

Upon reflections, I sometimes feel that my dad’s life was a lesson in character and integrity – just for me. As I go about trusting my heavenly Father, His Word, and His plan for my life, I’ve learned that the seeds of trust were planted there by an earthly father who was trustworthy. I agree with Alexander Pope when he said, “An honest man is the noblest work of God.” It is from observing this noble work of God that I draw strength daily to live my life and lead my family

REV. DICK THOMASSIAN AND OTHERS

I am thankful that as a teenager, my Minister of Music and Youth, Rev. Dick Thomassian, taught me how to lead singing, preach, and win souls to Christ. When I surrendered to the ministry at 16, and through the years, he encouraged me to “keep on keeping on.”

His example, along with the example of many others, taught me at an early age the importance of proclaiming the wondrous deeds of God. Dad, Mom, Bro. Dick and so many others embodied the words of Charles Haddon Spurgeon, who wrote,

“A good character is the best tombstone. Those who loved you and were helped by you remember you when forget-me-nots are withered. Carve your name on hearts, and not on marble.”

II. “So even to old age and gray hairs, O God, do not forsake me.”[18]

ven though my hair is white, and I am 81, I still have the strength to say,

“I’ve served a God who was always by my side, on the mountains, and in the valleys, in divorce, in prison, in my battle with cancer, and when I felt forsaken or alone.”

THROUGH IT ALL

Through it all, Through it all

I’ve learned to trust in God.

Through it all, Through it all,

I’ve learned to depend upon His word.

I thank Him for the mountains,

I thank Him for the valleys;

I thank Him for the storms He brought me through.

For if I never had a problem;

I wouldn’t know that He could solve them.

I wouldn’t know what faith in God could do.

[Andrae Crouch]

Through it all, God restored me to my family, healed me from cancer, gave me a beautiful place to live, and a wonderful Church Family,

“So even to old age and gray hairs, O God, you have not forsaken me.”… Thus,

III. “I proclaim your might to another generation, your power to all those who come.”[18]

Through the years, I’ve had the privilege to proclaim the power and might of God to another generation, to my family, friends, and at my Church. Even though at times I failed the Lord, I have done my best to live a life rooted in Christ and faithful to His Word.

In April 20l9, I started sharing my story on Twitter, and in more than 800 tweets, I’ve had the privilege of sharing with generations the goodness of God and His power to save.

While I was writing this article, a CD of the Kingdom Heirs was playing on my stereo. The quartet sang, “Pass the Torch to Me,” and as I listened, I knew those words were my hope to finish well.

PASS THE TORCH TO ME**

[Verse]

When you chose me Lord, to carry, I said, ‘Yes, Lord.’

You knew that I was weak, but yet you called.

I stumbled and I’ve slipped, But you never lost your grip.

You held me up, so the torch still burns.

[CHORUS]

Pass the torch to me, I’ll run faithfully.

This Flame of Life must never be laid down.

So with dignity, I’ll attempt to be,

One who carries the cross,

Until the task is done.

CLOSING

Senior Friend, you are in the greatest days of your life. You have time to be a blessing. With each new day God gives, share your wisdom and your testimony of God’s faithfulness to all generations. Finish well, so that when you stand before the Lord, you will receive the WD Award, “Well done, good and faithful servant…Enter into the joy of the Lord.”[ Matthew 25:21, NIV] —————————————————-

LIVING A LIFE OF FAITH,HOPE, AND LOVE

This month I began a study of First Thessalonians. Today, I was blessed by these words of Paul to his friends at Thessalonica,

‘We remember before our God and Father your work produced by faith, your labor prompted by love, and your endurance inspired by hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.”     [I Thessalonians 13]

Paul, remembered before God, the faith of the Christian believers at Thessalonica, and he was encouraged by their triad of faith, hope, and love.

Their goals of faith, love, and hope, all all characteristics, we should all strive to have as Christians. First,

1. Their work was produced by faith in Jesus Christ.

My faith journey began when I gave my heart to Jesus on my 9th Birthday, January l9, 1953. At the end of my mom’s Good News Club, my twin brother and I told our mom we wanted to be saved. She prayed and we prayed and we were born again. Ephesians 2:8, described what happen in two brothers that day.

“For by grace are you saved through faith, not by works but by the gift of God.”

For 72 years, I have lived by faith, not perfectly, but by leaning on the Lord, believing, “faith is the victory, that overcomes the world.” My acrostic for FAITH has been, “Forsaking All, I Trust in Him,” for:

…“without faith it is impossible to please him; for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.” [Hebrews 12:6]

These believers at Thessalanicia not only produced work by their faith in Jesus,

2. Their Labor was prompted by their Love for God

When, by faith, we first trust in Jesus, we experience the awesome love of God as stated in John 3:l6:

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” [John 3:l6]

Then after we are saved, we are called to labor prompted by our love for God. What a glorious privilege and calling it is for us share the good news of the Gospel here and around the world, because,

“We love him because he first loved us. If a man says, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?” [I John 4:l9-20].

May we like these be New Testament believers, strive to to have “work produced by our faith in Jesus, our labor to be prompted by our love of God, and to have:

3. Their endurance, inspired by Hope, Given by the Holy Spirit.

When we become a Christian, we discover God has a road map for our lives.

Jeremiah 29:11, are the Words of God, saying,

“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.”

After 81 years, I can testify, through these years, God has given me a futureGod gives a future, through hope by the Holy Spirit. Hope comes in the good times, but also in the bad, when we suffer loss.

On August 6, 2025, my beloved 50-year-old son, Mike, went home to be with the Lord. Even though my heart was broken, God, through His Spirit, gave me hope from His Word:

“But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with Him. [I Thessalonians 4:l3-14]

May we all be remembered, like the Thessalonians, that we demonstrated in our daily living, the foundational Christian virtues of faith, love, and hope.

Thus, Faith begins when we accept Jesus and is essential to please God.

God’s Love is bestowed on us and as a result, we have the privilege to share that love to others.

And Hope gives us added endurance, even in loss, to,”Hold On, Pain Ends. We live in anticipation for a glorious future, and “What a day that will be, When our Jesus we will see. And He takes us by His Hand, and leads us to the other side.” [Jim Hill]

Dear friend,

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.”[Romans l5:13]

Friends, share with others, Faith, Hope, and Love. https://youtu.be/qG5kzHyfUHQ?si=pDkzppC0gjqe_zsG

BE STILL AND KNOW

If there is anything I have learned in these last 8 decades of living, is that if we want to know the mind of God, we must follow the admonition of Psalm 46:10, to:

“Be still and know that I am God.”

The entire chapter of Psalm 46 exalts the sovereignty and majesty of God, beginning with verses l-2,

“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore, we will not fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea.”

Verse 6 says, The heathen raged, the kingdoms were moved; he uttered his voice, the earth melted.”

Verses 8-9 say,

“Come, behold the works of the Lord, what desolations he hath made in the earth. He maketh wars to cease unto the ends of the earth; he breaketh the bow, and cutteth the spear in sunder; he burneth the chariot in the fire.”

BE STILL AND KNOW THAT I AM GOD

In this majestic Psalm, surrounded by the greatness of God in every verse, God, in verse lO, exhorts His children:

“Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen. I will be exalted on the earth.”

The Hebrew in this verse translates to, “be still in order to know.”How important it is for each of us, every day, to have a quiet place, and a quiet time with God. As we become still and surrender our lives, wills, and desires, we will get to know God in all His glory and majesty.

Matthew Henry, in his commentary, says this about Psalm 46:10:

“Let those who deny God be still, and threaten no more…Let them rage no more, for it is all in vain; ‘He that sits in heaven laughs at them;’ and, in spite of all their impotent malice against His name and honor, He will be exalted among the heathen…”

“Let His own people be still; let them be calm and sedate, and tremble no more, but know, to their comfort, that the Lord is God, He is God alone, and will be exalted above the heathen.”

This morning, at 5 a.m. on my son Mike’s porch [who passed away on August 6, 2024], I waited in stillness before God. I didn’t say anything, and, for an hour, I let God do the talking. It was so beautiful. I left that place of prayer with renewed hope and added strength for the journey.

Precious friends, in a world gone mad, in these times of anxiety and stress, set aside time, every day, to “Be still,” in the Presence of God.

“For God alone, my soul, [must] wait in silence; for my hope is in Him.”[Ps 62: 5-6]

THE ROMANS ROAD TO HEAVEN

This week in my Men’s Prayer Group, we are studying Romans l0 1-l3. Reviewing those verses took me back to l960, when I was l6 years old. My two brothers, my sister, my mom, and my dad were all members of Fairfield Highlands Baptist Church in Birmingham.

For five wonderful years, our Minister of Music and Youth at FFH was Rev. Dick Thomassian.** While he was there, the Youth Choir and Adult Choir grew to 60 in each group. Every Wednesday night, the highlight of the week was Bible Studies taught by Bro. Dick to more than 75 young people.

I wanted to be around him all the time because he was such a living example of Christ. Bro. Dick mentored me for three years, and taught me how to share Christ, with the lost through the Romans Road to Heaven.

We went out every Tuesday night presenting Jesus. One night Bro. Thomassian told me it was my turn to share Jesus. I gave the plan of salvation to Rebecca, a 9-year-old girl. After I witnessed her, she prayed the sinner’s prayer and was gloriously saved.

From that day forward, I spent many years sharing the Romans Road to Heaven with the lost around the world.

Here is the outline I used:

                            ALL ARE LOST

     Romans 3:23, tells us,

“For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”

God’s Word lets us know everyone is a sinner. We all have sinned, and because of our lost condition, we, “fall short” [miss the mark] of the Glory of God.

THE WAGES OF SIN IS DEATH

 Romans 6:22 (a) reads, “

…the wages of sin is death.” If we remain lost and do not trust in Jesus, the wages of our lost condition is death, which is eternal separation from God.

But here is the good news!

THE GIFT OF GOD IS ETERNAL LIFE

The auspicious news is that God has provided a way, a “gift,” for the wages of our sin. Romans 6:22 (b) proclaims,

“…the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”

Jesus, virgin-born, lived 33 years on this earth, and was crucified on a cross for our salvation. On the third day, he rose again. God offers an awesome gift to all who believe and receive Jesus, a gift that atones for our sins and gives eternal life.

HOW TO RECEIVE THIS GIFT OF SALVATION

Romans lO: 9-lO, tells us how to receive Jesus.

“If thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.”

“For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.”

If we pray and confess with our mouth, “Jesus as Lord,” and believe with our heart God raised Him from the dead, we will be saved.

WHOSOVER SHALL CALL ON HIS NAME

I, then, asked the lost person, “Would you like to receive Jesus, right now? Read with me Romans l0:13:

“For whosoever shall call upon the Name of the Lord shall be saved.”

I then told them, “Precious friend, you are a ‘whosoever.’ Right now, you can pray a prayer, call on His Name, ask forgiveness for your sin, and God will give you the gift of salvation.

“Would you like, right now, to pray that prayer and receive Jesus into your heart?”

If they said, “Yes,” I led them in this prayer:

                   PRAYER TO RECEIVE CHRIST

“Dear Lord Jesus, I call upon your Name, and I thank you for dying on the cross for me. Right now, I ask you to forgive my sin and come into my heart. Thank you, Lord, for saving my soul. Thank you, Lord, for making me whole. Amen’”.

After they prayed that sinner’s prayer, I told them that “on the authority of God’s Word, you are ‘born again,’ and on your way to heaven.” I encouraged them to follow Jesus every day and spend time in God’s Word and Prayer. I let them know that “now that you are saved, you need to make a public decision as a new Christian at your Church.”

Pastor Tony Walister at Silverdale Baptist says it this way:

“How can I know for sure that I am saved and will go to heaven? It’s a simple matter of believing with the head, down deep in the soul, and confessing with your mouth publicly your new faith in Christ.”

Friend, if you don’t know Jesus, let the Romans Road to Heaven lead you down the path to salvation and eternal life. I encourage all my Christian friends to take the time to study and memorize these passages in Romans, and share the good news with others God places in your path.

[I would love to hear from you about your personal experience of salvation.]

Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved! https://youtu.be/aT0FB6o7Jgk?si=4o_qxOV4Bu0ZM27u

ALL THINGS WORK TOGETHER

This week, I had the privilege of memorizing Romans 28-30. What amazing, encouraging verses.

Romans 8 was written to Roman Christians experiencing great tribulation and persecution by the wicked, ungodly Roman government. Paul gives these mistreated believers renewed hope in these three verses.

ROMANS 8:28

Paul begins with Romans 8: 28, the fourth most popular verse in the Bible, which gives us the precious promises that,

“…all things work together for them who love God, to them who are the called according to His purpose.”

The story of Joseph, in the Book of Genesis, clearly demonstrates Romans 8: 28. It was bad when Joseph was sold into slavery by his brothers, and later cast into prison with false charges. But God took the bad and turned it around for His glory. That bad became good when Joseph became the second highest ruler of Egypt, and was restored again to his father and his brothers.

Many years after he was sold into slavery by his brothers, he stood before his brothers and told them,

“…do not be distressed and do not be angry with yourselves for selling me here, because it was to save lives that God sent me ahead of you.” [Genesis 45:5]

Romans 8: 29-30

These three verses, like “Gold on a chain,” verses 29-30 give five additional promises of marvelous things we will experience, as God works all things together for our good.

Romans 8: 29-30

We were foreknown by God. [29]He set His love on us in eternity past, setting us apart, foreknowing all that would happen, and no matter what, one glorious day, His grace will lead us home.

We were predestined to be like Jesus, before the foundation of the world, to be, “conformed to the image of His Son.” [30] If walk with Jesus, and live a Godly life, those who see us, will not say, “What a great person he is,” but, seeing Christ Image in us, will proclaim, what a Great Savior He serves.”

We are Called by God. When I was nine years old, God convicted and called me to Jesus. [30] On my 9th Birthday, kneeling beside my mom, after her Good News Club, I prayed the sinner’s prayer, and on that day, a “new name was written down in glory.”

Isaiah 43:l, God declares, “I have called you by name; you are mine.”

We are “justified, “[30] just as if we had never sinned.” When we are saved, God moves a willing person from the state of sin [injustice] to the state of grace [justice]. Jesus, “was delivered over to death for our sins, and was raised to life for our justification. [Romans 4:25]

We are Glorified: This awesome word, “Glorified,”in the past tense, means God determined in eternity past to liberate our bodies from sin and decay, and shortly, we will share in the glory of Christ. Our resurrected bodies in that new heavens and earth will experience deep fellowship with God for all eternity; that’s, “glorification.”

Romans 8:28-30 is God’s promise to His Children that “all things will work together for good, for them who love God, and who are called according to His purpose.” “O what a Savior!”Hallelujah!”

TWO DESIRES AT 81

Every day, when I wake up, I marvel at the goodness of God giving me 8l years of life on this beautiful earth. At 81, here are two things I desire the most:

TO KNOW JESUS

At 9, my mom won my twin brother and I to Jesus. Now, 73 years later, my greatest desire is to know more about Jesus, through His Word, in prayer, in creation, and in the lives of those He helps me to love and encourage. The words of this song, “More of You,” speak my heart’s desire in the sunset of my life:

“More of You, more of You

I’ve had it all but what I need Is more of You.

Of things I’ve had my fill, But yet I hunger still;

Empty and bare, Lord hear my prayer, For more of You.” [Gaither]

Paul, the beloved Apostle from a Roman Prison, speaks my thoughts in getting to know Jesus:

“That I may know Him, and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of His sufferings, even made conformable even to His death.” [Philippians 3:10]

TO GO TO HEAVEN

As an advanced senior, my second greatest desire is to go to heaven, to see the “Pearly White City,” built by the Hands of God. How I long to see my son Mike, my son who passed away August 7, 2024, my mom, dad, my brother, and many friends of yesterday, that “great cloud of witnesses, “on the other side. Homecoming Day is just around the corner, and “Heaven, I hope to win.”

Soon and very soon, I’ll see friends and loved ones. But most of all, I will see and kneel before the One who outshines them all, my best friend, JESUS.

“What a day that will be, When my Jesus I shall see.

When I look upon His face, the One who saved me by His grace.

Then he’ll take me by the hand, and lead me through the Promised Land.

What a day, glorious day that will be. [Jim Hill}

Beloved friends, know this: “The length of our days is in your hands, O Lord. What counts, though, is not how long we live but how we spend those days. Give us wisdom to know how short, how fleeting life really is.” [Joni Eareckson Tada]

NEVER GIVE UP, NEVER GIVE IN

Are you discouraged? “Does the place you labor seem so small and little known?” Is all the negativity in this world keeping you downhearted and sad?” Well, here’s some good news, some great news, some glorious news!!

Paul reminds us in I Corinthians 15, that when Christ died and rose again, the “sting of death was removed,” and, “death was swallowed up in victory.”[54-57] Paul concludes in this encouraging chapter, in verse 58:

“Therefore, my dear Brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you, always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.”

I believe Paul is saying to discouraged, downhearted believers, “Never give up! Oh, Never Give In! Knowing death has been swallowed up in victory, (1) “stand firm [and] let nothing move you, (2) Give ourselves fully to the work of the Lord, and (3) Know, your labor in the Lord is not in vain.

Easter Sunday, my Pastor said it this way: “That since Christ is risen and we will rise too, we can give ourselves fully to the work of the Lord. We can be people of supreme confidence, firm and immovable, even by death and its pressures…”

“…We can jump right into a life of labor for the Lord because it won’t ever be in vain or to no purpose. The hope of the Gospel energizes us to labor diligently in our vocations, serving our family and neighbors wholeheartedly. …” “

“…Because Easter has changed your expectations about life after death, because it has changed your outcome from defeat to victory, you now go about life in a better way, a more confident way, a hope-filled way.”

[Pastor Eric Melso, Living Hope Lutheran, 5/4/25]

Fellow Believers, rejoice with this Good News! “Never Give Up, Oh, Never Give In!”
