MAKE ME THY FUEL, FLAME OF GOD

I have been blessed once again reading the writings of Amy Carmichael (l867-1951), who was an Irish Christian missionary who dedicated 55 years of her life serving in India, without ever returning to her home country.

She is best known for her founding of the Dohnavur Fellowship, missions, and orphanages in Southern India, which provided a sanctuary for hundreds of children, particularly young girls who were rescued from a life of prostitution.

Amy wrote 35 books about her missionary work and her ministry to the Dohnavur children. These anointed books contain many poems by Amy that are loved by every new generation.

Perhaps her most quoted poem, “Make Me Thy Fuel,” encourages Followers of Christ to be living flames in proclaiming the gospel at home and around the world. Take a moment today, and read each line from this beloved missionary of days ago.

MAKE ME THY FUEL

From prayer that asks that I may be
Sheltered from winds that beat on Thee,
From fearing when I should aspire,
From faltering when I should climb higher;
From silken self, O Captain, free
Thy soldier who would follow Thee.

From subtle love of softening things,
From easy choices, weakenings,
(Not thus are spirits fortified,
Not this way went the Crucified)
From all that dims Thy Calvary
O Lamb of God, deliver me.

Give me the love that leads the way,
The faith that nothing can dismay,
The hope no disappointments tire,
The passion that will burn like fire;
Let me not sink to be a clod;
Make me Thy fuel, Flame of God.

  1. Wow, what a hero she was—saving young girls from exploitation. I mean, can you even imagine what kind of monster would prey on vulnerable children? Someone who gains their trust, maybe even under the guise of spiritual leadership, only to betray them in the worst way possible? Just awful. Truly chilling to think such people exist.

  2. Interesting, I saw you’re using the title “Dr.”, but from what you listed, it looks like you have a bachelor’s and a master’s degree, plus a paralegal certification. Just curious where the doctorate comes in?
